Description: High ratio zoom lens housed in a compact construction and incorporating Sigma's original OS (Optical Stabilizer) function.
This compact high zoom ratio lens is designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras and incorporates Sigma's original OS (Optical Stabilizer) function. This system offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 35cm (13.8in.) at all focal lengths, and has maximum magnification of 1:3.8. It is the ideal lens for several type of photography such as landscape, snap shots and close-up photography. SLD(Special Low Dispersion)glass, a molded glass aspherical lens and two hybrid aspherical lenses provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), which ensures a quiet and high-speed autofocus.

Sigma’s own unique OS (Optical Stabilizer) technology
The lens is equipped with Sigma's own unique OS (Optical Stabilizer) function. This function uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera and works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group to effectively compensate for camera shake. This system offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower. It also automatically detects movement of the camera and compensate for camera shake when shooting moving subjects such as motor sports.
* Pentax and Sony mounts are not incorporated with OS function.
Compact construction
Its compact construction has an overall length of 88.5mm (3.5"), maximum diameter of 74mm (2.9") and weighting just 450g/15.9oz (Sigma mount).
The close focusing capability
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 35cm (13.8") at all focal lengths, and has maximum magnification of 1:3.8, making it ideal for close-up photography.
Super image quality
SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass, a molded glass aspherical lens and two hybrid aspherical lenses provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. The super multi-layer coating reduces flare and ghosting. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range.
HSM(Hyper Sonic Motor)
This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), which ensures a quiet and high-speed autofocus.*
* AF will not function with Pentax ist* series and K100D DSLR cameras that do not support HSM.
Inner focusing system
The inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the supplied petal-type lens hood and circular polarizing filters.
Magnification scale
A magnification scale is displayed on the lens barrel, ensuring ease of use
* Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras.
* AF will not function if the Pentax camera bodies do not support HSM. Pentax and Sony mounts are not incorporated with OS function.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Convenient...
Cons: ...but only during the day.

Compact size. Can be forced to produce decent enough photos. Tends to hunt when focusing on the K10d. Fair old bit of the barrel distortion at the wide end.
I replaced this with a faster lens with a less ambitious zoom range. The Pentax 18-55II is a much better choice, if you're in the market for a budget lens.
