I live in Holland, where I bought the kit with the 18-55 for 400 euros, which would be 580 dollars, and I find this camera amazing value. You get a lot of settings and stuff that is rarely seen in the starters-segment, like ISO 3200, extra LCD, metal chassis, metal fitting on lens... If you are thinking of buying a cheap and fast DSLR, take this one into examination as well!
