Hello Everyone,

I wanted to introduce members here to a worthy series called Confessions of a Photographer, by Bert Stephani. He has created 8 episodes so far. I feel that many here will benefit from watching his series as they are very inspirational, and utilize standard camera flash units and basic umbrella (very simple, inexpensive approach to great results). I have placed the links to each episode, in order, below:

You can visit his Website for further information. I sent him an email after I first watched the series to thank him for taking the time to put it together for the benefit of others.

Yes I know LaRee what you mean, he makes it look quite easy. The thing that appealed to me was that it proves that the standard camera flash units can get the job done. I had been considering buying some studio strobes (and wondering about dual voltage models, and battery options that would allow the strobes to be used outdoors. With the basic camera flashes you can go anywhere, they are small, etc. I also like his 3 stops trick. Where he meters the background exposure value, stops down 3 stops, then sets his flash units to obtain the desired illumination for his model (creating an evening feel and increasing the dramatic effect of illumination on his model). Most people (ok maybe just me - ha ha) become so focused on trying to get the perfect illumination of their subject they never stop to see an easy trick that can increase the overall dynamic lighting range in their photo. Why play around with 3-9, or 5-9 when you can have 1-9
(Ansel Adams “zone system”, 1 being pure black & 9 being pure white)

Here is a link to a quick explanation of the Zone System

Ok, sorry, getting a bit off topic (it is way to late – good night all) Embarrassed

Thanks for the link Tim. I'll have to take a look at that link when I get home from work tonight. But maybe after I pack my bags for tomorrow morning. Wink
